[ARCHIVED] Council Considers New Electric Rates

Galion City Council passed first readings for legislation related to electric rates during its Dec. 12 meeting. Ord. 2017-62 will adopt a one-step rate change in order to ensure the city’s Electric Fund maintains a sufficient balance over the next five years. Click here to view a chart.

Effective Jan. 1, 2018, the customer charge will increase accordingly:

  • $2 per month for residential customers
  • $5 per month for commercial customers
  • $4 per month for power customers
  • Remain unchanged for large power customers

The service charge portion of the bill will also see an increase. The amount is dependent upon kilowatt hours of electricity used. To calculate the change in your bill, please click here and enter your electric usage.

“We must adjust rates to keep up with costs and also to be sustainable over the next few years,” Councilman Mark Triplett emphasized.

Council passed a separate ordinance to set the Power Cost Adjuster to ‘0’. It was previously set at $0.0057 earlier this year, but the PCA will not be necessary if the customer charge is changed. This reduces the overall increase that customers will see through the previous ordinance.

A second reading on these items will be considered at a special meeting on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Council also passed second readings for the Financial Recovery Plan and 2018 budget that evening. As discussed during the previous meeting, the Health Department budget was kept at $259,000 per year for all years in the recovery plan. Anticipated grant funding was also incorporated into the budget, and Electric Fund projections were modified based upon the rate changes in which council is considering.

Ord. 2017-71 amended 2017 appropriations for the following:

  • $200,000 decreased from FAA Grants Fund
  • $5,000 appropriated for Police Department salaries and wages
  • $186,000 appropriated for a reimbursement grant for an ambulance (will be transferred back to General Fund after the reimbursement is received next year)
  • $15,500 appropriated for Fire Department salaries and wages
  • $209,820 transferred out of the Severance Fund
  • $7,500 appropriated for Water Maintenance Department salaries and wages
  • $5,500 transferred within the Recreation Fund for salaries and wages

This item passed as a final reading.

Ord. 2017-72 advanced funds to the Cheshire Debt Service Fund and the FEMA Fund, in the amounts of $72,406 and $186,000, respectively. This item passed as a final reading.
