SafeWise has released the annual Safest City rankings, including state-by-state lists. Galion ranked as the 88th safest Ohio community, and the safest community in Crawford County.
178 Ohio communities were included in the ranking. Scores were based on reported violent crimes and property crimes per 1,000 people, as included in crime data published by the FBI in 2017.
Galion’s score was 1.19 violent crimes and 28.29 property crimes per 1,000 people. By comparison, Chester Township earned the number one spot with zero reported violent crimes and a property crime rate of 0.77. The other cities in the top three also had zero reported violent crimes.
Bucyrus placed 133rd on the list with scores of 2.2 violent crimes and 36.86 property crimes per 1,000 people. Galion also edged out Ashland, which came in 89th, and Shelby, which took the 90th spot. Nearby communities Marion and Mansfield ranked 144 and 154, respectively.
“The Buckeye State reported 3.60 violent crimes per 1,000 people, compared to 4.49 across the country. But its property crime rate of 29.63 exceeds the national rate of 27.11,” according to SafeWise.
