City Council had just two legislation items to consider during its July 9 meeting.

One ordinance authorized the sale of six transformers no longer needed by the city. Galion was contacted by Tipp City, which was recently hit by a tornado. The community has an emergency need for replacement transformers.

Safety-Service Director Nicole Ward explained Galion has six single-phase transformers. The Line Department has phased them out due to the upgrade of the electric distribution system. The city purchased the transformers for $6,900 each but have depreciated in value.

The other ordinance corrected an account number within an ordinance passed at a June meeting. The original legislation appropriated $2,000 to the Storm Water Fund for debt service.

The city also received notification from the Ohio Division of Liquor Control regarding an application made by Galion Fresh Market to obtain a state liquor agency permit at 230 Portland Way North. City Council requested a public hearing due to several questions regarding the business. A hearing was previously requested for the same company’s application for the transfer of an existing license previously held by Geyer’s, which allows carryout sales of beer and wine.

In other business, Mayor Tom O’Leary said the administration will be coming to council with an engineer’s recommendations regarding the bridge on North Market Street. The city planned to replace the bridge or perform significant repairs using the state’s Municipal Bridge Program, but the bridge approaches have deteriorated. There are currently steel plates over the stressed areas of the pavement and the area may need to be addressed quickly.
