[ARCHIVED] Grant Projects Authorized for Airport Improvements

City Council authorized a total of $606,940 for improvement projects at the Galion Municipal Airport, primarily grant funded through the Federal Aviation Administration.

During the Aug. 13 meeting, council passed ordinances to rescind previous legislation and reauthorize the acceptance of an FAA grant, as well as to increase the project estimate for a taxiway and runway lighting project from $400,037 to $530,000.

Safety-Service Director Nicole Ward explained alternate bid items were not included in the original cost estimate. When the city was recently notified that more Federal dollars are available, it made sense to include the alternates.

Another planned improvement project is crack sealing the runway, taxiway and apron. FAA funds will cover 90% of the total project costs. The local match is $33,718.

Later in the meeting, Council went into executive session to discuss pending litigation. It reconvened without further discussion on the matter.

In other legislation, Council amended appropriations in the Airport Fund in the amount of $25,000 for aviation fuel. The city has experienced an increase in fuel sales this year.

A second reading was held for 2019-42, an agreement with Everstream to attach commercial fiber optic lines to city-owned utility poles.

A first reading was held for 2019-48, to amend section 501.13 of the Codified Ordinances. This section authorizes the mayor to appoint a special code enforcement officer. The amendment strikes “health sanitarian” and changes to “any other designee.”
