[ARCHIVED] Council votes down solid waste management plan

Last evening, city council unanimously voted down legislation to approve an updated solid waste management plan prepared by the Crawford County Solid Waste Management District. In effect the proposed plan increases the Crawford County Recycling Center's rates to help cover operation costs.

Council President Carl Watt noted the updated plan has already been approved by legislative authorities that represent more than 60% of the county population, which is the minimum amount required to put the new plan into effect.

"There is no Galion representation on the committee," Watt said, referring to the policy committee that prepares the plan. He stressed that Galion needs representation.

Mayor Tom O'Leary added that the city was not consulted during the process.

It was also pointed out that Galion has one recycling trailer permanently stationed in town, compared to three recycling trailers in Bucyrus.

Council voted 7-0 against the legislation in protest to an increase in trash and recycling rates.
